He pounds out “Summer” from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Cocky. His fingers flutter like lark wings and the bellows hyperventilate. Virtuoso and impressive. A sonata, original music for accordion by Russian, Vladislav Solotaryov, finishes the treat in Styrstad. The melody entwines and the rhythm sways. The music offers an invitation to dance under the church vaults.

Kallis Bengtsson plays Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, fugues of Bach, or a sonata of Solotaryov in a racing tempo seemingly equally unencumbered. Nothing appears unplayable on this instrument. Kallis Bengtsson’s hands richly vary tempo changes, phrasing, tone strength, and rhythm.

Kallis Bengtsson offered a musical climax with his concert on Sunday. His performance put the spotlight on an extraordinary clavier instrument in the hands of a musician of international class, Kallis Bengtsson. He masters the accordion with great skill. Kallis’ repertoire was also a musical treat. First was Prelude and Fugue in A-Minor by a modernist, Matyas Seiber, with a burst from Bengtsson’s clavier that resembled a church organ. It showed how well it could fit-in in a church environment. Then there was the Four Seasons’ “Spring” by the undeniable Vivaldi. This lovely music was made more beautiful by the accordion tones with the soloist’s finesses in his register. Likewise with Sonata in G-Minor by Vivaldi’s contemporary, Scarlotti in Bengtsson’s sorbet, nicely dampened bursts with nice echoes in the church. A documented great work for the organ, but here for the accordion is Toccata and Fugue in D-Minor by Bach. I was at once equally impressed of Kallis, his nuance-rich and well phrased performance as Dame Gillian Weir, one of the world’s foremost organists. Kallis played the beautiful Asturias by Albéniz transposed to accordion. He set a personal mark on the music with this enjoyable performance. Musically, this belongs in a higher school, likewise the contemporary Sonata nr. 2 by Solotaryov. Fine phrasing and nuances in harmony on the accordion. Solotaryov’s strong stylistic image also felt obvious with Kallis’ interpretation of the sonata. “A wonderful musical experience”, expressed the organist when she thanked the soloist for his performance. One would have to agree!
